eFon: International Phone Calls Made Simple
Welcome to the eFon blog! This is our very first post, so let us start with a proper introduction: who we are, what eFon does, and why millions of minutes of international calls already run through it every month. In the posts that follow we will share practical guides on calling specific countries, saving on roaming, and getting the best voice quality out of your phone — but today, the stage belongs to the app itself.
What is eFon?
eFon is a mobile app for cheap international calls to any mobile or landline in the world. The person you are calling does not need the app, an internet connection, or a smartphone at all — their phone simply rings, like with any normal call. Your side of the call travels over the internet (Wi-Fi or mobile data), and eFon hands it over to the regular telephone network in the destination country.
That one idea changes the economics completely. Calling abroad directly on a mobile-operator plan is still remarkably expensive; with eFon you pay one clear per-minute rate, with no connection fees and no subscriptions — and save up to 90% compared to dialling the same number directly from your phone plan. You can check the exact rate for any of the destinations we cover before you dial.
Built by people who spent 20+ years in telephony

eFon is not a weekend side project. Behind the app is a team that has spent more than twenty years in the telecom industry — building and operating international voice routes long before app stores existed. Over those years we have built direct relationships with carriers and operators across the world, and that network of connections is exactly what makes eFon work so well:
- Better prices. Direct routes mean fewer middlemen taking a cut of every minute — the savings go to you.
- Better quality. We choose and monitor routes ourselves instead of reselling whatever is cheapest today, so voices sound close, not like they are travelling through a tunnel.
- Hard destinations, done right. Countries that are notoriously difficult to call — like Eritrea or Ethiopia — are where experience and carrier relationships matter most. They are our speciality, not an afterthought.
How calling with eFon feels
We built eFon to feel like the phone app you already know, not like yet another messenger:
- Install the app and sign up with your phone number.
- Top up your balance — you always see the per-minute rate before you call.
- Pick a contact or dial a number, and press call. eFon takes care of the international prefixes.
There is nothing to configure and nobody new to invite. Because only your side of the call uses the internet, it works the same whether your family holds a brand-new smartphone in Berlin or a simple landline in Asmara.

More than calls: eSIM for travellers
Cheap calls solve one half of staying connected; the other half is data when you travel. That is why eFon also offers a travel eSIM — mobile data packages you can install before your trip and switch on the moment you land, without hunting for a local SIM card or paying roaming rates.
Get the app
eFon is free to download on both major platforms:
Installing takes a minute, and your first look at the rates costs nothing.
What is next on this blog
This blog will be the practical companion to the app: country-by-country calling guides with dialing codes and the best times to call, roaming and eSIM advice, and tips for better call quality. The first guide — how to call Eritrea from abroad — is already live.
Thanks for reading, and welcome aboard. Talk soon — literally.
